Happy Birthday Hazel- Update

This post is a little belated, I am trying to get caught back up from April. Hazel's birthday was April 20th.

On Hazel's actually birthday we had a little family party for her.

Gus was getting a little jealous of this whole Hazel-getting-a-birthday-party thing. Stinker.

Hazel, opening up her presents from mommy and daddy, as well as one that came in the mail from St. Louis.

Waiting patiently to get her 3 year old pictures taken.

Talking to gma Paulette on the phone about her birthday.

This was the cake we had a little later that week when we hosted the joint birthday party for Hazel and Gus, since my parents were in town. Half Star Wars, half Max and Ruby... this had to be one of the most unique  birthday cake themes ever.

Walter loved the cake!

Monday afternoon, totally and utterly exhausted. I looked at these two while I was driving home because it was oddly quiet and I was pleasantly surprised to see them sleeping. A very busy week.

Bunny Hop & Spaceships

Our backyard is full of bunnies. They are pretty used to people, which scares us a little. Wally was having fun chasing one around the yard. It was a huge rabbit and would let Walter get pretty close.

Walter was so excited to get so close- look at his face!

Hazel and Wally are pretty good buddies. They were just laying here. Wally was just laying on her. They were laughing. It was very adorable.

Nanny Ty sent me this picture last week of Walter enjoying some time outdoors.

Yesterday afternoon Hazel and Gus made spaceships, we taped paper and straws to the ships, and used stickers and markers too. They 'flew' all through space (our living room) for at least an hour. I wish I could be as easily entertained some days...

Are You Going to Have More Kids?

Today I became aware of the inspirational story of how three tiny triplets, born 3 1/2 months early, have journeyed through the trials, tribulations and joys of life. They are now 14 months old, about Wally's age actually, and healthy little bundles of busyness. Their mother is from my hometown of Rockford, Iowa so I was surprised that I had never heard of this family before. If you are interested, her blog is http://thekoobers.blogspot.com/ . Have tissues ready if you decide to go back and read posts from the time around their birth. It's the stuff Hallmark commercials are made of.

I did read some current posts on her blog as well, in fact the last post, updated today, discussed the offensive and tiresome questions mothers of multiples are too frequently asked, such as: Are they all  yours? Are they natural? Did you breastfeed them all? etc. I'll admit that I have asked many of these questions to mothers of multiples. Human minds are intrigued by what they deem as different and unknown. I suppose those questions do become daunting though. Duly noted.

One question that I found noteworthy that this mother tires of answering was, Are you going to have any more children? But it wasn't so much that question, but her response that interested me the most. The author stated that this question bothered her because she posed that a mother of three singletons would never be asked this question, so why should she? Well, her rationale isn't completely right, at least in my experience. I get asked that question constantly. Every week I'll bet. And although I don't have triplets, I do have three singletons aged four or under. Honestly, you would think my frazzled composure, t-shirt stained with boogers mixed with dried orange juice, hair that hasn't had the time to be combed (okay, washed) in three days, or the turrets-like "Stop that, Come here, Don't hit" tick that floods out of my mouth-gates would be answer enough.

I think that people see families that have three (or more kids) and think, "Well, I guess they have thrown all limits out the window, I wonder how many more they'll have," and so they ask. Because mothers of three or more singletons are asked that same question all the time, I just really wanted to clear the air a little. To be frank, I think anyone who asks someone with any number of children under two that question should probably rethink why on Earth that would be a good time in that mother's life to inquire on that particular subject.

Although I never get asked, Did you know you were having three at once?, like a mother of triplets might, I do get asked some of the other questions she posed in her post. Such as, How do you do it, they are all so young? Or, How do you get it all done?. Now not to downplay at all the incredible strength it must take to raise multiples, especially premature ones with elaborate health concerns through out life, but I do believe that stress is relative, it is subjective, and it is hard to really know how other mothers feel or why they make the decision they do.

Twins, triplets, quads: much more work than I can fathom. Having more than one baby at a time would truly test my sanity. Honestly, I am not sure I would have been able to handle three baby Hazel's at one time. But I do think that all moms regardless of whether they have one, two, three or six kids deserve recognition that being a mom is hard. And not just moms, dads too.

I guess  no matter your situation, strangers ask inappropriate questions all the time to parents. My kids have odd names, daily I get, Is that a family name? Is Gus short for anything? What are their middle names? (That last one irks me the most because what the person is really asking is, Wow, you really named your daughter Hazel? Man she is going to hate you. Hopefully she has a middle name that she could use instead when she gets older. What is her middle name? And you should see them cringe when I say Luella. I almost get enjoyment out that actually... )

So, I guess I can answer the question that inspired this post, Are You Going to Have More Kids? As far as I know, unless God has more Walters surprises for us, I am not planning on having any more biological children. Josh and I do actively entertain the idea of adopting a child in the future. By child I mean no bottles, sleeping through the night, and potty trained. I have had either one or two children at a time in diapers consistently for nearly 5 years, with at least one more year to go and I am ready to be done cleaning up other people's poop and pee.

Seriously though, Josh is from a family of four, I am from a family of three, so we like the idea of having a healthy-sized family. I guess when strangers ask me that dreaded question, Are You Going to Have More Kids?, I'll just continue to smile, shrug, and remember that mothers of multiples get asked more questions more frequently than I. Selfishly, I suppose there is some solace in that.

Okay, enough, enough. I know. And to all of you that prefer my blog to be filled with my kid's pictures rather than my narratives, don't worry, more videos and photos are waiting to be uploaded.

What a great time to say Happy Mother's Day to all mothers reading this (especially mine, thanks Sue, job well done, I love you).

KCKCC Preschool Graduation

Last week a local high school visited the childcare center and performed a version of Little Red Riding Hood. As you can see in the picture, Gus is enthralled & Hazel is bored... Gus is wearing a black shirt in the center back, and Hazel is is a denim romper top, far left looking away from the play, off into space I presume...

Before Gus's graduation last Friday, May 3, the kids learned about Cinco De Mayo. Hazel volunteered to serve as model for demonstrate traditional Mexican clothing.

Here is Gus at his graduation walking with his class and his teacher Mrs. Jakki. My big boy will be a kindergartner next fall... So sad! But happy :)

Last night I was playing around with the new cameras my department bought for next semester. I had to make a sample video to use in the adjunct training for tonight. Here is what the kids gave me...

New Swingset, Birthdays and First Communion

For their Big present Hazel and Gus got a swing set. Thanks to daddy, uncle Brandon and Papa Randy for helping put it together. Hopefully with warmer weather soon the kids will get to play with it more.

Our friend Drew turned 3 this past weekend. Wally enjoyed his cupcakes!

Easter, Birthdays, and Check Ups

I'm turning into one of 'those' bloggers... Every day I say to myself, "Traci, you need to blog. You need to blog. You need to blog..." but I swear there is not enough time in the day! I work full time, have the three young kiddos from 1 pm on, clean the house, make meals, exercise, grade papers, Dr's. appointments, check my emails, play a game or two of Words With Friends, and I'm shot. Most nights I am hitting the sheets at 11 pm and have no energy to blog, knowing I have to get up at 6:15 am and start the grind all over again.

Okay, okay, enough complaining. I know all of you have very busy lives too, but if you know me well, you know I like to complain about everything and anything. The one thing that keeps me sane, well actually there are three of them, are the kids (aside from my loving husband of course). Although they contribute to I'd say about 70% of my insanity, they are the most amazing kiddos a mommy could ask for.

My friend Amy and I went out with a few other gals and had a belated birthday drink, hence the sombrero. Amy runs and recently asked me to run in a 5K with her. We enjoy YMCA classes and we walk together when we can, but a 5K is a big deal for me, someone who until recently didn't think they liked to run. Well, we registered for the Kansas Heart & Sole event, and on May 4th I will be running my first 5K. I am training myself now, and I have run about 3 1/2 miles twice this past week, so I know I can do it. And, it surprisingly, feels awesome. I didn't know I could push my body as hard as I have; it's always fun to do something you never thought you could do.

We have also had Easter since I posted last. I didn't get pics of all the kids, but Wally sure loved what the Easter bunny brought him! He was such a cutie, and boy does he like Peeps!

Josh and the kids threw a birthday party for me. We pulled Wally's highchair up to the island and he shimmied up to the countertop put his chubby little sausage elbows under him, clasped his hands together, and couldn't stop looking at the cupcakes with a huge grin. It was adorable. My favorite smiles from him are the ones from behind his paci. He does this little thing where he moves it off to one side so you can see his smile. Precious.

My flowers.

My gifts from the older two.

Finally digging into the cake.

Gus started baseball with Olathe Youth Baseball. Our neighbor is an assistant coach and we were able to get Gus on his team. Gus is so funny, with his batting gloves, cleats, baseball pants. He had his first practice last week on a real field and he did a good job. I was very proud of him. Devastated by the reminder of how old he is getting, but proud indeed.

The other night we took the kids to a self serve yogurt shop near our house. They loved making their own bowls of whatever flavor or toppings they wanted. It was a lot of fun.

Hazel is getting so old. She turns 3 on Saturday, so she had her well check visit last Friday. She weighs more than I did at my 5 year appointment! I weighed 34.8 pounds, and she weighs 35! She is in the 90% for weight. She is 37 inches, or the 50% for height. She is a very solid girl, and so athletic. She can keep up with Gus any day. She is such a chatterbox lately too. Sings, plays, talks, talks, did I say talks? all the time.

Wally went to his 15 month check up the same day. He had to have to shots, but was so brave. He weighed almost 25 pounds (76%) and was 30 1/2 in (50%) in height. His head is 19 in, which is in the 90%. He can talk a little, uh-oh, hi, Gus, mama, dada, shakes his head no. He points at what he wants. He climbs like a little monkey, eats about anything you put in front of him, and sleeps immediately when you lay him down. Still at 2 naps a day. Josh loves how he is flipping me off in this picture. They learn young I guess :)

Hazel has been home sick 2 days this week with an ear infection. She had a temp of about 102 for 3-4 days so I took her in yesterday and she has another ear infection. This is her 3rd one in 4 months. She is pretty tough though. Right before I took this pic her temp was nearly 102. She dressed her self. She called herself a "Bad Guy Princess". Gus was the bad guy pirate, and he had his Halloween costume from 2 years ago on. They play very well together.

I am growing my own outdoor plants this year. Gus is helping me and he loves checking it each morning to see how much they have grown. We did landscaping- laid over 50 bags of mulch- over the weekend, so I can't wait for the plants to grow a little bigger so I can place them. We are already ready for spring. In fact the kids wooden swing set, well hundreds of pieces of it anyway, is being delivered this afternoon. Sunny weather hurry, I am tired of rain!

Here is a random of Walter from two days ago. In his favorite place, my shower, doing his favorite thing, tearing through laundry.

Wally is definitely a daddy's boy. Josh got home from work the other night and walked in behind me when I was trying to take a pic of Wally rocking alone in his chair. From the time I pushed the button to the 2 second delay of when the camera actually took the photo, Wally moved to this position and I was able to capture the happiest-baby-boy-when-he-sees-daddy grin. I hardly ever get this reaction but all Josh has to do is hit the garage door button and Wally is instantly excited. I'm jealous, but love it.

Hazel's birthday is this weekend so I hope to get more pics and post them soon. We are having her professional pics taken on Saturday so I will hopefully have those back soon and out to some of you with Thank You's.

See? Now that post only took 44 minutes- although I haven't proofread yet- not too bad I guess. Love and miss you all!
